OurShield is committed to making our website and apps usable by everyone, including people with disabilities. This page covers two related but distinct things: our accessibility commitment for the interfaces we build, and how the OurShield Android app uses Android’s Accessibility API internally.
1. Our accessibility standard
We target conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA across ourshieldai.com and the OurShield parent and admin web apps. This includes keyboard navigability, sufficient color contrast, text alternatives for non-text content, and compatibility with screen readers such as VoiceOver, TalkBack, and NVDA.
2. Ongoing work
Accessibility is an ongoing process, not a one-time certification. We review new features against WCAG 2.2 AA as they ship and welcome reports of anything that falls short — see §4 below.
3. Why the OurShield Android app requests the Accessibility API
The OurShield Android app is a parental-control app. On a child’s device, once a parent has enabled it, the app uses Android’s AccessibilityService API for one purpose only: detecting which app is currently in the foreground, so the parent-configured app blocks, daily time limits, and bedtime/school-hours schedules can be enforced. The service reads only the foreground app’s package name from the typeWindowStateChanged event — it does not read, record, or transmit on-screen text, typed input, or any other window content.
This is not an accessibility tool for users with disabilities — OurShield does not claim to be one, and the service is off by default. It is enabled only after a parent walks through an in-app explanation of exactly what it does and why, then confirms it in Android’s own system settings. The parent can turn it off at any time.
