WhatsApp takeover check
A two-minute check that nobody else is using your WhatsApp.
This can happen to anyone. Scammers trick people into sending a code or linking a device. The fix is quick. Never share the 6-digit WhatsApp code with anyone, even someone you know.
1. Check Linked devices
- Open WhatsApp. On Android tap the three dots at the top right. On iPhone open the Settings tab.
- Tap Linked devices.
- Look at every device in the list. If you do not know one, or no longer use it, tap it and choose Log out.
2. Turn on two-step verification
- In WhatsApp open Settings, then Account, then Two-step verification.
- Turn it on, choose a 6-digit PIN and add an email so you can reset it.
- Never tell this PIN, or the 6-digit code WhatsApp sends you, to anyone. Not even a friend.
3. If someone already took over
- If you can still open WhatsApp, log out every unknown device under Linked devices now.
- If you are locked out, install WhatsApp again on your phone and sign in with your number and the code sent to you. Then check Linked devices.
- Call your family and friends. Tell them messages from your number asking for money are not from you.
- If anyone paid, call 1930 and tell the bank. Save screenshots, and report at cybercrime.gov.in.
